Flooding closed Lost Maples State Natural Area and restricted access at three other Hill Country parks, giving DFW travelers reason to recheck their plans before heading southwest.

Restrictions by destination

  • Lost Maples State Natural Area was closed because of flooding and continued rainfall as of July 14.
  • At Guadalupe River State Park, flooding had closed the River Day Use area, Wagon Ford and the Bauer Unit as of July 15. River access from state park property was also closed because of high water.
  • Blanco State Park remained open for day use, but its low-water crossing and river access were closed as of July 15. The Kendalia Road exit was unavailable, and campers were directed to an emergency exit on Highway 281.
  • Hill Country State Natural Area reported closed trails and headquarters as of July 15 and warned that surrounding roads could be flooded.

Checks to make before leaving DFW

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department advised visitors to review the live alert for their individual park and check DriveTexas for road conditions. Immediately before departure, check the individual park alert and review DriveTexas for the route.

A state severe-weather notice said rainfall across Southwest, Central and Southeast Texas was expected through the end of the week, increasing the risk of flash flooding. The parks department also issued a travel advisory for state-park visitors.

For regional context, DFW Daily Brief’s July 15 North Texas forecast placed the greatest heavy-rain and flash-flood concern mainly along and south of U.S. 84.
