Meals on Wheels programs in Dallas and Tarrant counties are seeking drivers as routes go uncovered, according to CBS Texas. The station reported that Dallas County’s VNA Meals on Wheels had five to 10 uncovered routes each day, while Tarrant County needed volunteers for about 40 routes.
The two programs have different signup processes and time expectations. Here is what their official volunteer pages tell prospective drivers.
Dallas County: weekday deliveries
VNA Meals on Wheels says Dallas County meal deliveries take place Monday through Friday between 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Prospective volunteers can begin with the program’s online registration portal.
Before signing up, compare that weekday delivery window with your availability. The portal is the direct route for registering with the Dallas County program.
Tarrant County: about one hour on one weekday
Meals On Wheels of Tarrant County says a driver generally volunteers for about one hour on one weekday. A typical route involves delivering 12 to 14 meals between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Drivers must use their own transportation and gasoline. People who can meet those requirements can submit the online volunteer form. The program also lists 817-258-6426 for volunteer information and training.
Choosing where to help
Dallas County may fit volunteers available during its broader 10:30 a.m.-to-1:30 p.m. weekday window. Tarrant County provides a more specific expectation: roughly one hour, one weekday and 12 to 14 deliveries, with the volunteer supplying the vehicle and fuel.
The shortage figures come from CBS Texas reporting; applicants should use the appropriate county program page to register.
