Tarrant County’s first human West Nile virus case of 2026 reportedly involved West Nile neuroinvasive disease, the uncommon severe form of the infection.
Published reporting also indicates that 86 mosquito pools in the county had tested positive for the virus. The update follows Tarrant County’s May 14 confirmation of its first positive mosquito samples of the year, collected in Fort Worth and Grand Prairie.
The county development comes after Denton reported its first human case of the season earlier in July.
How often West Nile causes illness
Texas health officials say roughly 80% of West Nile infections produce no symptoms. About 20% cause West Nile fever, while less than 1% develop into neuroinvasive disease.
Steps to reduce mosquito exposure
State and county guidance recommends removing standing water, repairing window and door screens, wearing loose-fitting long clothing and using an EPA-approved insect repellent. State health officials specifically identify DEET and picaridin as effective repellent ingredients.
