Dallas Animal Services is operating far above its available dog-kennel capacity, according to the shelter’s official portal. The live count shows 494 dogs in 307 kennels, putting dog capacity at 161%.
The cat side is also nearly full, with 86 cats in 95 kennels, or 91% of capacity. Together, those figures give Dallas residents a current measure of the crowding and show why placements matter now.
Ways residents can help
The shelter portal provides separate paths for people who want to view adoptable animals, find pets needing emergency placement, foster an animal or arrange a dog daycation. A daycation offers a shorter commitment than fostering, while adoption and emergency placement move animals out of the shelter.
Dallas Animal Services is at 1818 North Westmoreland Road. Because the portal publishes daily in-person adoption hours, visitors should check the current schedule before leaving for the shelter.
A separate facilities problem
The capacity numbers come as the city continues addressing mechanical needs at the shelter. A June 18 City Council memo documents the failure of a rooftop HVAC controller and motor at Dallas Animal Services, along with continuing mechanical-system repair needs.
The records show two simultaneous pressures: dog kennels are substantially over capacity, and the shelter building has needed mechanical repairs. The city memo does not say the HVAC failure caused the crowding, so the issues should not be treated as cause and effect. For residents ready to help, the official portal is the direct starting point for the available placement options and current visiting hours.
