Scott Vornberg took the oath of office as Garland’s interim police chief, completing the police leadership change that followed former Chief Jeff Bryan’s move into city administration.
How the transition unfolded
Garland announced the two appointments July 14. Bryan became an assistant city manager effective July 20, filling the vacancy left when Phil Urrutia departed to become San Angelo’s city manager.
The city subsequently administered Vornberg’s oath as interim police chief. The sequence moves Bryan from leadership of the Police Department to a broader City Hall role while placing a longtime Garland officer at the department’s helm.
Vornberg’s experience in Garland
Vornberg is a Garland native and a graduate of Lakeview Centennial High School. He has served in the Garland Police Department for nearly 32 years.
Before becoming interim chief, Vornberg served as an assistant chief and commanded every division within the department.
Bryan joined the Garland Police Department in 1997 and had served as police chief since 2019.
